Waite Park Annual Town Meeting

Please join the Waite Park Community Council for the Annual Town Hall Meeting on Wednesday, March 3 at 7:00 p.m. at the Waite Park Community Center (1810 34th Avenue NE).  We will be adopting the 2010 budget and electing a president, vice president, and seven board members.

The meeting will focus on housing.  Holly Holt, a Waite Park resident and a realtor with Keller Williams, will discuss the neighborhood real estate market and the number of homes in foreclosure.  Cheryl Hoban, a loan officer with Residential Mortgage Group, will speak about available credit and mortgage programs.  The council plans to allocate funds for a low-interest revolving loan program, and Denise Eloundou, of Northeast Housing Resource Center, will explain the program.

Two of our local representatives will also be present at this meeting: Kevin Reich, Ward 1 City Councilman, and Doron Clark, Neighborhood and Community Engagement Commission Representative.

You are invited to a meeting with us to discuss your concerns and questions.  The meeting will be on March 10th at 6:30 p.m. at Waite Park, 1810 34th Ave NE to meet and converse with the Lieutenant and the Crime Prevention Specialist who work in your neighborhood.

Lt. Whisney, who supervises officers who work in your neighborhood, will provide information on:

  • How you can help the police,
  • Staffing in the precinct, and
  • Crime trends.
Carol Oosterhuis, the Crime Prevention Specialist for your neighborhood, will also present information about some programs, including:

  • 311
  • Youth Crime Prevention in Northeast
We are inviting individuals from the neighborhood boards and individuals who have helped coordinate block events recently and other concerned community members in Audubon, Columbia, and Waite Park Neighborhoods to this meeting.

If you have a specific concern, such as a problem address on your block, please call your Crime Prevention Specialist at (612) 673-2874 to discuss the issue, before the meeting.  We ask you to do this for two reasons.  First, we do not want you to wait for the meeting to report concerns; and secondly, we want to research information, so we can answer your questions and at the meeting.

We thank you for your commitment to building a safer community for yourself, your family and your neighbors.

Join your neighbors to discuss constructive solutions for addressing the impact on our community from the rail yard, distribution center and rail lines in northeast Minneapolis related to the 230-acre Shoreham Yards and its adjacent train tracks.

Federal laws govern most of what goes on at sites like Shoreham Yards and on its tracks.

  • Noise
  • Proximity to schools, homes, businesses, parks
  • Toxic/hazardous materials storage and cargo
  • Hours of operation
  • Track maintenance
  • Inspections and training
  • 2009 vs. 1889: what a 21st-century rail yard neighbor really means to us
  • Health, safety and quality of life
  • International cargo distribution center issues
  • Buffering and property upkeep
  • Workable solutions
  • Derailments

The Northeast Push Cart Derby

The First Annual Northeast Push Cart Derby at Waite Park was a success. The event drew over 100 neighbors from around Northeast Minneapolis to see eight teams compete in head-to-head racing. After several heats and some photo finishes, the Love Bug team from Cleveland Street barely beat out the Hayes Street Hot Pockets in the championship race.

The Waite Park Community Council would like to thank Lily's Coffee Shop, Culver's, Home Depot, The Minnesota Rollergirls, The Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board, The Northeast Chamber of Commerce, Bywood East Health Care, Pete Herrera, Mary Farnham, all the volunteers and neighbors that made this a great afternoon of racing. We will see you next year!
