Waite Park Neighborhood Meeting for August

Carol Oosterhuis from the Minneapolis Second Police Precinct will be the special guest at the next Waite Park Community Council meeting. Carol will be on hand to discuss policing issues in the Waite Park and Upper Northeast Minneapolis area. Please join us!

The Waite Park Community Council meetings will be held at the Waite Park Community Center at 1810 34th Avenue NE at 7:00 on August 4. We hope to see you there.

Protect Yourself from Crime This Summer

Like many other parts of Minneapolis, crime is on the rise in Northeast Minneapolis. Many neighborhoods are reporting increases in overall crime, especially theft. Crimes have increased in Waite Park in 2010 as well, especially in the summer months.

Please do your best to keep your property safe by locking the doors to your homes and making sure your garage and cars are secure. For more tips on how to prevent crime, please visit the Crime Prevention Resources site through the City of Minneapolis Police Department.

Don't forget about National Night Out coming up in a few weeks as well as the various programs through the Waite Park Community Council.

Waite Park Residents Invited to Energy Workshop on Thursday, August 19

Join over 1,700 Minneapolis homeowners that have already participated in Community Energy Services, the one-stop residential energy program designed to help save homeowner's energy and money.

A free educational workshop for Waite Park homeowners will be held in Audubon Park (1320 29th Ave. NE) on:

By attending the workshop, you are eligible to receive a customized home visit, a $400 energy efficiency package for a co-pay of only $30, however the first 20 homeowners who register will have $10 of their co-pay paid by the Waite Park Community Council! This package includes two energy professionals from the Center for Energy and Environment spending an hour and half with you in your home. During this time they will perform a blower door test, which measures air leaks, as well as install energy and money saving materials. Some of these materials may include: compact fluorescent light bulbs, a programmable thermostat, low-flow showerheads, faucet aerators, pipe wrap and more!

Homeowners are also provided with 12 months of personalized energy tracking. This unique feedback allows you to see how your home uses energy, compares your energy use to like-sized homes and gives you future saving potential. Participants are also given information on financing, incentives, the federal tax credit and gain access to rebates available only to Community Energy Services.

Community Energy Services is provided by the Waite Park Community Council, Center for Energy and Environment, City of Minneapolis, CenterPoint Energy and Xcel Energy. Funding for this project was provided by the Minnesota Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund as recommended by the Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources (LCCMR).

A Discussion on the Future of Neighborhoods in Minneapolis

On Wednesday, July 7 at the next Waite Park Community Council meeting, representatives from the City of Minneapolis Neighborhood Community Relations Department (NCR) and the Neighborhood and Community Engagement Commission (NCEC) will be on hand to discuss the future of neighborhood engagement between the City of Minneapolis and its 72 different neighborhood.

Issues for discussion will include future goals and plans for the Waite Park neighborhood and what resources the City of Minneapolis will be able to offer in the coming years. A brief discussion of these issues will take place at the Waite Park Community Center from 6:00-6:45, prior to the full Waite Park Community Council meeting. Everyone interested in these issues is encouraged to attend.

The Waite Park Community Center is located at 1810 34th Ave NE, adjacent to the Waite Park Elementary School.

Waite Park is Looking for a New Board Member

The Waite Park Community Council is looking for a new board member to join our ranks!

The Waite Park Community Council (WPCC) works closely with local Minneapolis schools, parks, elected officials, police and other stakeholders in our community to uphold and further the interests of the residents of the Waite Park Neighborhood. The WPCC is comprised of 15 board members and 4 officers that are dedicated to working for the interests of the Waite Park community. The Waite Park Community Council meets regularly on the last Thursday and first Wednesday of each month at the Waite Park Community Center.

Interested parties must by over 18 and live, work or own property within the Waite Park Neighborhood. The WPCC is a registered 501(c)(3) organization. Nominations will be held at the next Waite Park Community Council meeting on July 7 at 7:00 p.m. at the Waite Park Community Center (1810 34th Avenue NE, adjacent to Waite Park Elementary School).

Community Energy Service Workshops are coming to Waite Park in May

The Waite Park Community Council, the Center for Energy and Environment, Xcel Energy, CenterPoint Energy and the Minnesota Environment and Natural Resources Fund are proud to announce two upcoming workshop for Waite Park residents.

Waite Park has been selected as one of the few neighborhoods in Minneapolis to participate in the upcoming Community Energy Service program. The Center for Energy and Environment is hosting two FREE workshops in May at Waite Park Elementary School. At these workshops, Waite Park residents will be able to sign up for customized home visits worth up to $400 of materials and services for a co-pay of $30. The Waite Park Community Council will pay $10 of your co-pay for the first one hundred participants.

Order an inexpensive tree to enjoy in your yard

More than 1,000 trees are being made available to Minneapolis residents for planting this spring. Since 2006, the City of Minneapolis has funded the City Trees program, a low-cost way for folks to help build the city's tree canopy. The trees cost $25 each, residents can order one tree per household, and all trees are available first-come, first-served. Last month, the emerald ash borer was found in Minneapolis and could potentially contribute to the decline of all of the City's more than 200,000 ash trees. Planting a new tree now will help start the next generation of trees.

Varieties of trees available are Fat Albert spruce, pagoda dogwood, Kentucky coffee tree, blue beech, Merrill magnolia, regal prince oak, Canada select chokecherry, Redmond linden and burgundy belle maple.

Orders for trees can be placed at www.treetrust.org. You can also order a tree by calling (651) 644-5800. In previous years, the trees have sold quickly, so place your order early.

Folks who order trees will need to pick them up on one of three days at the Minneapolis Impound Lot, 51 Colfax Ave. N.

Volunteers will be on hand to help load your new tree and complimentary bag of mulch into your vehicle.

Waite Park Community Garden Sign-Up is right around the corner!

New gardener sign-up will happen on Saturday, April 10th at 9:00 am at the Waite Park Community Center, (1810 34th Ave. NE). Prompt attendance is recommended, as preference will be given to Waite Park residents, then residents of Minneapolis, then surrounding suburbs. Potential new gardeners should bring proof of residence, a check or cash for $35 to cover plot fees, and expect to stay until about 11:00 am, in order to review garden policies and procedures.

New Residential Energy Program Coming to Waite Park!

Learn how to reduce your energy use and save money! The Waite Park Community Council is proud to introduce Community Energy Services, a partnership with the Center for Energy and Environment, CenterPoint Energy and Xcel Energy.

Community Energy Services Provides:

FREE educational workshops to teach homeowners how to lower their energy use and save money;
Low-cost materials which may include: low flow showerheads, setback thermostats, compact fluorescent light bulbs, gasket seals, door sweeps, faucet aerators, pipe wrap and more to help participants save now;
Customized home energy visits from qualified professionals who will identify additional ways for residents to save in their homes, including a blower door test. Up to $400 in services and materials for a co-pay of only $30;
Personalized energy use inventory for the last 12 months and feedback for the next 12 months;
Information on financing, incentives and rebates.

Waite Park Annual Town Meeting

Please join the Waite Park Community Council for the Annual Town Hall Meeting on Wednesday, March 3 at 7:00 p.m. at the Waite Park Community Center (1810 34th Avenue NE). We will be adopting the 2010 budget and electing a president, vice president, and seven board members.

The meeting will focus on housing. Holly Holt, a Waite Park resident and a realtor with Keller Williams, will discuss the neighborhood real estate market and the number of homes in foreclosure. Cheryl Hoban, a loan officer with Residential Mortgage Group, will speak about available credit and mortgage programs. The council plans to allocate funds for a low-interest revolving loan program, and Denise Eloundou, of Northeast Housing Resource Center, will explain the program.

Two of our local representatives will also be present at this meeting: Kevin Reich, Ward 1 City Councilman, and Doron Clark, Neighborhood and Community Engagement Commission Representative.

Minneapolis Police Holding a Public Meeting at Waite Park for All Upper Northeast Residents

You are invited to a meeting with us to discuss your concerns and questions. The meeting will be on March 10th at 6:30 p.m. at Waite Park, 1810 34th Ave NE to meet and converse with the Lieutenant and the Crime Prevention Specialist who work in your neighborhood.

Lt. Whisney, who supervises officers who work in your neighborhood, will provide information on:

How you can help the police,
Staffing in the precinct, and
Crime trends.

Carol Oosterhuis, the Crime Prevention Specialist for your neighborhood, will also present information about some programs, including:

We ask you to do this for two reasons. First, we do not want you to wait for the meeting to report concerns; and secondly, we want to research information, so we can answer your questions and at the meeting.

Lily's featured at Heavy Table

Lily's at 33rd and Central was recently featured in a glowing story at Heavy Table.

In a seemingly endless sea of Caribous and Starbucks, it can be difficult to find an independently owned gem of a coffee shop to get your caffeine fix. Harder yet is to find a place that invites guests in for a broader, community-minded experience. A favorite few places throughout the Twin Cities come to mind when seeking this kind of experience, and new to my list is Lily's on 33rd and Central in Northeast Minneapolis. from In Brief.

Lily's is open from 7:00 am until 3:00 pm Tuesday through Sunday. They are open until 8:00 pm on Wednesday evenings. Starting in April, Lily's will be open until 8:00 pm Tuesday through Sunday.
