Properly prepared yard waste will be collected Wednesday, December 7th through Friday, December 9th.  Yard waste crews will not follow typical collection days.  All yard waste must be at the Solid Waste Collection Point on December 7th, 2011 by 6 a.m. to be collected.

This one-time collection is designed to assist customers by providing a convenient method to dispose of yard waste accumulated after the end of the regular yard waste season.

When preparing yard waste:

  • Brush and branches are to be put into bundles.  Individual branches must not be longer than 3 feet and no larger than 3 inches in diameter.
  • Bags must weigh less than 40 pounds.

The community spirited family whose home has great woodwork or a recent makeover? 

The 2012 Minneapolis & Saint Paul Home Tour is already looking for homeowners and home improvement professionals to feature on the late-April tour. Nominations/applications are due Monday, January 16, and early submissions are encouraged. It's the Tour's 25th year, and it will be held April 28 and 29, 2012.
 
"People attending the tour are looking for ideas on how to remodel or expand their homes," said Tour coordinator Margo Ashmore. "Homeowners on the tour enjoy  feedback and find it's also a great promotion for their neighborhoods."
 
Contractors often help staff the homes, and homeowners ask family and friends to contribute a few hours hosting. "A good support network makes it fun. It's a great incentive to finish up the last few little projects," Ashmore said. "Recruit help at fall and winter gatherings, and identify clusters of homes to call special attention."
 
Contractors and other vendors may nominate homes they have worked on, and are encouraged to call for more information about sponsorship. Green, energy efficient, and historically-sensitive remodels and expansions get special notice among the 50 homes. It is not necessary to have remodeled the whole house.
 
The tour is a celebration of city living that encourages homeowners to improve existing homes, and to complement the neighborhood vibe if they build new. For the past several years the median has suffered due to harsh weather, salt and plowing, occasional accidents and overall neglect. Many of the trees and shrubs along the median died off or were severely stressed, but a new plan is in the works to restore the median to a more natural state and resolve a number of long-standing driver and pedestrian issues. You may have noticed that the Central Avenue median between 27th and 37th Avenue NE was stripped bare and cleaned in late September. For the past several years the median has suffered due to harsh weather, salt and plowing, occasional accidents and overall neglect. Many of the trees and shrubs along the median died off or were severely stressed, but a new plan is in the works to restore the median to a more natural state and resolve a number of long-standing driver and pedestrian issues.

The stripping and regrading is the start of the plan by the Department of Public Works to rebuild a new, sustainable median. The first step is to resculpt the median to hold rainwater better. The previous grading design caused much of the rainwater to run off the median into the storm sewer. 

The new design will simplify the overall variety of plantings, increase sightlines for drivers and pedestrians and provide tree canopy coverage where necessary. The new plantings, along with a better design, should create a better looking median that is easier to maintain while eliminating some of the existing pedestrian and driving difficulties.

The Department of Public Works, Councilman Kevin Reich's office and the surrounding neighborhood organizations, including Waite Park, will be holding special meetings throughout the fall and winter to inform the public on the status of the project and solicit input. Jenny Arneson, the MPS School Board member that represents Northeast Minneapolis, will be on hand to discuss the proposed recommendations put forth by Minneapolis Public Schools to address increased enrollment in the coming years. 

Our strong Northeast schools have become popular options for parents and students in our area. With the increased popularity comes a surge in student numbers that will affect all of our area schools in the coming years. 

The MPS School Board has proactively begun addressing this issue by creating and implementing a number of strategies that help parents make good decisions on the best school for their children. You can find more details in the presentation below.

twitterrace.pngThe Calhoun Area Residents Action Group (CARAG) and Waite Park Community Council will challenge each other next month in a race to 300 Twitter followers.

Twitter has become an increasingly important supplement to the organizations' neighborhood outreach efforts. More than 200 people have subscribed to each neighborhood's Twitter stream, making them two of the most followed accounts among all Minneapolis neighborhood organizations on Twitter. Next month, both groups will try to break the 300 follower mark before the other one. 

The goal is to build awareness for Minneapolis neighborhood organizations, as well as show how social media can help create stronger neighborhoods.

The contest will kick-off on October 1 and continue until one organization reaches 300 followers. The winner will receive a small prize from the other organization, to be presented at a future neighborhood meeting.

CARAG (@CARAGmpls) represents the heart of Uptown in southwest Minneapolis. The neighborhood is bounded by Lake Street and 36th Street to the north and south and Hennepin Avenue and Lyndale Avenue to the west and east.

WP Housing Program Update: $19,367.55 available for program income to be rolled back into loan programs or by way of NRP plan modification to be used elsewhere. $121,813.70 still available in WP Revolving Loan program and $32,990.00 available in WP Emergency Repair program. Board needs to evaluate best course of action. Will request attendance of GMHC staff at next WP board meeting to further discuss options.

Liz Wielinski, Park Board Commissioner: The park board is in the process of figuring out what is affected by the state shutdown.  Rec Plus is not being funded by the state, but is being funded by the park board until the state funds come in.  Mississippi Dev Project is progressing.  Recently hired a new planning chair, Bruce Chamberlain.  Liz will be back in November 2011.

    We discussed splitting up the responsibilities for the Fall Festival.  On Saturday, August 13th @ 1:00, Mary is going to teach a push cart clinic.

  2. Northeast Chamber of Commerce Rpt Gabe Nelson:
    On 7/11/11 from 4:30 to 7:00pm: Volunteer opportunity with Loaves and Fishes. This is at the Creekside Community Center, in Bloomington. On 7/11/11 from 11:00 to 1:00pm: Power networking. This is at the Bloomington Chamber of Commerce, in Bloomington. This cost $20 for members and $40 for non-members.
  3. Public Education NE Alita Bergan:
    There was no PEN meeting until August.  Increasing enrollment meeting had about 200 people attend.  NE needs to find room for 300 students by 2015.  Our ideas were to make Sheridan from k through 5 vs. k through 8.  They also thought to open Webster as a community school vs. an open school.  There was talk of opening the 807 building or adding classes in Edison, but it is fairly full.  Other things coming up is the community barbecue on August 5.
  4. Waite Park Voice / Web Site Anthony Beard:
    The last issue will be showing up shortly.  The next issue's deadline is August 5.
  5. Communications Committee Amy Softich:
    There hasn't been a meeting since the last board meeting.  the shopping bags, magnets have shown up.
  6. Waite Park Community Garden Connie Stauffer:  
    The steering and communications have met.  The garden is going to participate in the community garden day on August 6 from 6:30 to 8:00.
  7. Correspondence Committee Gary Arnsten:
    Bywood's carnival is on Saturday July 9th from 9:00am to 2:30pm.  On Thursday July 28th, from 7:00 to 9:00pm What's up on the upper riverfront is happening at Bottineau Park Rec. Center.
  8. NRP/CPED Steering Committee Gary Arnsten:
    The contract between the community ed has approximately $2k available to spend until next year.



8:10 Announcements:

Eric Gilbertson is moving to Roseville, where he has bought a house.  This will be his last meeting.

Motion: WPCC thank Eric for three years, when Eric took of the newsletter.  (Motion Approved)

Push Cart Derby Prize Money: At our agenda setting meeting we discussed giving cash prize to first and second place finishers, along with the most creative.  The third place finisher would win the swag welcome package.  In order to qualify for a cash prize you must build your own cart. If you don't build you can donate the prize to a organization that serves the WP neighborhood. We would use big fake checks and would use income from fund raising for this prize give away.  

Motion: Allocate cash prizes of $400 total from Fall Festival profits for the push car prize moneyy.  $200 for the first prize, $100 for the second prize, and $100 for the most creative.  The third place finisher will receive a bag of swag.  In order to qualify for the cash prize the winner must build its own cart.  If the winner uses a pre-built borrowed cart (WPCC push carts), the WPCC will denote the winnings to a organization that serves the WP neighborhood. (Motion Approved)

Join your Northeast neighbors and folks from all over the Twin Cities at the 3rd Annual Push Cart Derby at Waite Park on September 10. Put together a team of three people, build a sturdy cart and bring it to the Waite Park field at 11:00 to enter the race. The winning team in the derby will receive $200! Second place will receive $100 and third place will receive a sweet swag bag filled with prizes and coupons from area retailers and other groups. There will also be a $100 prize awarded for the Most Creative push carts.

TO ENTER:

  • Build yourself a durable cart that can be pushed on grass and can turn. 
  • Get together a team of three people, two pushers and one "driver" (All team members must be over 10 years of age and members under 18 must have parent/guardian approval, all team members must wear helmets to participate).
  • Join us for registration at 11:00 AM at Waite Park to register your cart and begin racing!
  • Need help? Join us on August 13 for "Learn the Basics of Building a Push Cart" workshop on August 13, at 1:00 pm at Columbia Gardens (3301 Central Avenue NE).

Get your friends and neighbors together and buckle up for an afternoon of racing. Hang around after the Derby and join in the Fall Festival with food, music and games for the kids.

Enjoy great food, fun games, and the celebration of the 6th anniversary of the "Battle of the Bird Houses" Silent Auction. All of the proceeds from this event will go to the Residents' Sunshine Club that provides outings, entertainment and holiday gifts for our residents.
 
  • DONATE: Slightly used "treasures," canned pop, and packaged snacks for a  Carnival Game called "Spin-to-Win." The deadline for Spin-to-Win items is noon on Friday, July 8.
  • DUNK TANK: Be a member of "Team Dunk Tank." All you have to do is donate 15 minutes of your time. We'll provide the water and the towels. Pick a time you would be available between 9:15 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on July 9, 2011. 
  • WANTED: Fudge Makers courageous enough to match their skills against our reigning #1 fudge maker, Jane Kupcho. How? Volunteer to make 1 batch of your legendary fudge. Your fudge will be entered into a "blind" taste test against other yummy fudges. Carnival attendees purchasing a "Judge the Fudge" sampler plate will vote for the tastiest fudge. Look for the "Judge the Fudge" booth. The winner will be announced at 2:00 p.m.
